During March (Music in our Schools Month), when we study a composer, students also become composers themselves. Here are the lessons I teach in 5th grade:
Lesson 1
1. Explain Sibelius.
2. Pass out Amazing Grace – explain how I will grade their performance.
3. Small groups of students on computer notating Scotland's Burning while rest of them practice Amazing Grace.
Lesson 2
Some students practice Amazing Grace, some use computer

1. Everyone practice Amazing Grace
2. Assess students playing Amazing Grace in groups of 4
3. Watch youtube How Recorders are Made

Composition - explain. Work with partners

1. Practice compositions on recorders – 5 mins
2. Perform
3. Tell students their grades – if time, have them replay for a better grade
