Teaching Composition-4th grade

During March (Music in our Schools Month), when we study a composer, students also become composers themselves. Here are the lessons I teach in 4th grade:

Lessons 1
Explain Sibelius.  Small groups of students on computers while rest of them practice learning The Train’s Off the Track on the recorder. I explain how I will grade them.
Students practice copying the song: Hosisipa into the computer program: Sibelius. This prepares them for when they notate their own compositions in the computer.

Lesson 2
Explain Sibelius again.  Small groups of students on computer while rest of them play Train's Off the Track.

Lesson 3
1. Recorder performance assessment: Train's Off the Track

    - Perform
2. Teach Composition chant – demonstrate example of a good song

Lesson 4

2. Composition - students work with partners
