This chant helps first graders learn rhythm. First, we learn the chant and pat the steady beat. Then, we clap the rhythm. Then, I pass out the worksheet. Below is the chant.
The students look at the worksheet and guess which line represents which phrase.
Phrase 1 = Line 4
Phrase 2 = Line 2
Phrase 3 = not on the page, since it includes sixteenth notes
Phrase 4 = Line 1
Then we play a game. Students sit in circle. I point to one student at a time on the rhythm while students pat rhythm. The 3 students I point to on the numbers "1,2,3" go to the middle of the circle and play woodblocks or drums on the rhythm the next time.
