4th Grade Rhythm/Jazz Lessons 13 - 19

Each lesson is 30 minutes long.

Lesson 13
2. Rhythm flashcards with partners - they take turns "quizzing" each other
3. Practice Rhythm Performance rhythms - Add unpitched percussion instruments. 4 groups of students, each play one part. Trade parts.
4. Read Jazz Fly (i.e. turn on the CD and turn the pages as you listen!)

Lesson 14
1. Wrong Side of the Bed Blues (song mp3 - scroll down, order Activate magazine here)
– listen, follow along lyrics on PowerPoint, mention "blues," "jazz"
or - replace the song with another blues song - see this post
3. Pass out Rhythm Performance student copy
    - Practice rhythms. Put papers in folders.
4.  Read Jazz Fly again

Lesson 15
1. Wrong Side of the Bed - sing through once
2. Rhythm Performance sheets
    - pass out
    - practice all together, explain
    - get partners
    - practice
3.  A Tisket A Tasket
     - I sing the folk song
     - Listen to the Ella Fitzgerald version several times.
     - Discuss differences between the folk song and the jazz version

Lesson 16
1. A Tisket A Tasket - listen to Ella's version again
2. Practice Rhythm Performance rhythms
3. Perform - in groups of 4-6 students.
4. Announce rhythm quiz next time
5. Jazz PowerPoint

Lesson 17
1. A Tisket A Tasket - listen to Ella's version again - maybe show the book illustrations while they listen
2. Rhythm Quiz
3. Jazz PowerPoint
4. John Coltrane book – listen and look.
     - Watch youtube version with music notes.

Lesson 18
1. Review Jazz PowerPoint
2. Jazz assessment.
3. Finish John Coltrane book
4. If time, Jazz Fly 2
