4th Grade Rhythm Lessons 7-12


Each lesson is 30 minutes long.

LESSON 7
1. Don’t Laugh at Me
2. Sing through Ama Lama once.
    - Show the PowerPoint with shoe rhythms.
    - Pass out shoe rhythm cards. (Make sure they each have all 5 cards.)
    - Dictation (2 shoes together) - Show answers on Shoe PowerPoint

LESSON 8
1. Don’t Laugh at Me
2. Shoe PowerPoint – Say rhythms with instruments: each riser lead, everyone else echo.
    - Triangles, Guiros, Cabasas, Hand drums, Claves, Maracas
3. Check Yourself 1 - go over answers
    - I do shoe dictation, they write down on paper what I did.

LESSON 9
1. Don’t Laugh at Me
2. Written assessment practice – show them a copy of assessment so they know what to expect
3. Review all notes/rests on the board (colored cards mixed up)
    - clap on “oh Eliza”  (later, add hand drums & claves)
    - snap on rests (later, add cabasas & triangles)
    - Intro SYNCOPATION = "Lil' Liza Jane" (later, add guiros & tambourines)

LESSON 10
1. Don’t Laugh at Me
2. Written Assessment: Shoe Dictation (I say these patterns: 1 3, 2 5, 4 3, 1 5)
3. Canoe Song – PPT
    - Sing
    - Ask students to figure out where the syncopated patterns are

LESSON 11
1. Don’t Laugh at Me
2. Review notes & rests with colored cards on board
    - Review “tam-ti ta ta” pattern - with cards on the board
    - Review “Ti ta ti”
3. Canoe Song – PPT
    - Sing
    - Again, figure out where syncopation
    - Clap rhythm, one riser each line – 2 risers play xylophone part
    - Add instruments:
       Bells, finger cymbals, maracas, triangles
4. Weevily Wheat 
    - I sing
    - Students find syncopation

LESSON 12
1. Don’t Laugh at Me
2. Review note names
    - Review “tam-ti ta ta” pattern - with cards on the board
    - Review “Ti ta ti”
3. Weevily Wheat – Add movements
4. New notes: Introduce sixteenth notes - show rhythm cards
