During March (Music in our Schools Month), when we study a composer, students also become composers themselves. Here are the lessons I teach in 3rd grade:
Lesson 1
1. Music Handwriting Practice – I show how to do first measure and eighth notes in the 4th measure. They finish, then show me, then go back to riser to practice the melodic patterns on paper xylophone.
2. When all done, I sing pattern, they play on paper xyl.
Lesson 2
1. Pass out Handwriting Practice papers again.

2. Teach Peas Porridge chant
- Use patterns on paper to practice phrases in chant
- Play on paper xyl
- Play on xyl
Lesson 3
1. Teach poem: Peas Porridge Hot
2. Explain composition
3. Students work together, check with me, practice on xylophones.
Lesson 4
1. Sousa PPT
2. Review composition – correct rhythms.
3. Practice songs on paper xylophones.
4. Students take turns on xylophones.
Lesson 5
1. Finish writing on staff.
2. When done, get computer page from me (made on Sibelius).
3. Write letters under notes.
4. Practice/Decorate
Lesson 6
1. Practice on xyl and paper xyl
2. Performances.
