O Hanukkah

I start this lesson by showing the following 4 phrases. We "ta" the rhythms, then add the lyrics. I ask the students what holiday those 4 phrases are describing.

Hanukkah!
Then I teach the song (the "A" section only) while students pat the beat.

We use the song as Section A and the rhythms - clapping and saying the words - as Section B. FORM: AB

Then I show the students a dreidel - and I show them my modified "music dreidel." Before we sing the song each time, students wait at the xylophones/ metallophones while another student spins the dreidel. Whatever note (whole, half, quarter or eighth) it lands on is the rhythm the students play on the bordun DA.

We add tambourines on Section B and keep repeating the form AB until all students have had turns on xylophones and tambourines.
