I put the students in 3 groups. The notes are in the shape of shoes, an idea I got from an old MacMillan series to go with the "Sore Foot March." The dotted rhythms can be likened to walking with a limp: loooong, short, looooong, short - instead of marching to a steady beat. While practicing these rhythms, we march around the room, play instruments - all on different days to practice the dotted quarter note- eighth note pattern.
The third group said these words and played xylophones on a DA bordun.
On another day we use foot cards to do rhythmic dictation. I make these 5 cards for each student. I have flash cards with and without numbers on the bottom. They can be helpful to make sure all students have the right number of cards - and to check their answers with the PowerPoint - but they could be confusing.
